CHAPTER TWELVE

“YOU BROUGHT ME TO A batting cage?”

Greg contained his smile at Liza’s horrified expression. “You said you wanted to hit something.”

She looked at him as if he was slightly crazy, and possibly he was. He thought after some really intense days, she needed a break.

A couple of hours where she wasn’t suffering from a traumatic condition. Where she wasn’t surrounded by people who thought she was lying. Here, at a park, with a bunch of moms and dads and their kids swinging bats, this was normal. She needed normal for a few hours. After her outburst, he told her to change into something comfortable for outside. She’d come back in a pair of shorts and a white sleeveless top. A plain, simple outfit. Still, it messed with his willpower.

He knew he didn’t think of her as a patient anymore; that option was gone. But he wanted to not think of her as a lover. His solution was to try and consider her a friend. Only a friend probably shouldn’t want to rip off her shirt and pull down her shorts so he could see her naked.

Get a grip.

When he headed to her place earlier he’d been considering a movie, but when she said she wanted to hit something, the cages popped into his head. After Tommy killed himself, on days when Greg couldn’t get out of his own way, the physical satisfaction of swinging hard at something and making physical contact helped to take him out of his brain.

If only he’d gotten addicted to that instead of gambling.

He knew what it was like to need a break from his life and he knew that after last night Liza would never come back to the loft. Not after Chuck made his feelings so evident. Greg didn’t blame Chuck. The evidence against her was strong. Greg also didn’t blame Liza. He wished he could be a better man for both of them. One wanted him to see reason. One wanted him to have faith.

He was a failure to both of them.

However, Greg decided that one of them needed him more. So he spent the day after leaving the police station thinking first about what might distract Liza and then about what he could do to make her house safer because he was too much of a pansy to accompany her to Atlantic City. Because he really, really didn’t want to think about the reasons he couldn’t man up and join her.

So he’d bought some deadbolts and called a locksmith and that made him feel better. Manlier, which was completely and utterly silly, but no one ever accused men of not being silly.

Now he’d brought her to this park and while she was not smiling she wasn’t frowning as intensely, either. “I don’t know if I can even hit a ball. I don’t think I’m very athletic.”

“You’re in shape.” She was in amazing shape. He’d felt that shape up close and personal so he knew for certain it was near perfect.
